Solar Steam Irrigation

Testing viability

This grant-funded programme developed solar-generated steam as a means of pumping irrigation water in sub-Saharan Africa. We developed and tested successive prototypes, combining engineering trials in the UK, Spain and Kenya with stakeholder research in Kenya and Zimbabwe.

The work investigated both technical feasibility and fit with local farming needs. Although the concept demonstrated pumping capability, lower-cost electric alternatives challenged its commercial viability.
